The Big List of Enlarging Lenses

Author/Copyright:

John Jovic

This list details the basic specifications for various enlarger or enlarging lenses. The specifications listed here are those most relevant to using enlarging lenses as taking lenses on a camera (film or digital) such as for close up, macro, product or a broad range of photographic uses.

This enlarging lens is being used with a helicoid to focus the lens from close range all the way to infinity. This technique allows an enlarging lens to be used just like any normal lens for all kinds of photography, not just macro.   There are many interesting and unusual enlarging lenses that can be used as taking lenses. Some are quite fast as in this example.

Enlarging lens used on a bellows for macro photography.
A lens hood helps to improves image quality by reducing flare.

The information in these tables is verified or referenced whenever possible however errors and omissions may occur.

References are listed in order of relevance with the most dominant listed first (in the 'Reference [h]' column). Where more than one reference is listed for a specific lens then the first reference is the most significant and is the source for the information of the relevant lens except where other additional references are individually stated in their relevant columns. For example, references might be stated as '[3][15]' where the information for a specific lens is mostly sourced from '[3]' but where any additional information, which  in this example is sourced from '[15]', will have that additional reference stated explicitly in each column where it is relevant.

Where specifications are stated from personal observation or measurement they are stated as such [pc].

Detailed specifications for selected lenses, as well as some source documents where possible, are listed in other pages on this site (see the links in red in the table below).

Much of the information below was kindly contributed by people like yourself! If you would like to contribute further information to this list with any manufacturer catalogues, brochures, marketing material, dealer price lists, technical specifications, instruction sheets/booklets about enlarging lenses then please do so by emailing the author.

Explanatory Notes
[a] Lens Construction is stated in E-G (Elements-Groups) format if known, or a single digit if only the total number of elements is known but the construction is unknown, or blank if not known.
[b] The lens Type will only be stated in this table if it has actually been stated by the manufacturer.
[c] Optimum Mag. (Magnification) and/or Mag. (Magnification) Range will be stated (if known) in the format Optimum Magnification followed by Magnification Range where both are known, eg. 10, 3-35.
[d] The Mounting Thread is the thread at the base of the enlarging lens used to attach the lens to an enlarger or any other device such as bellows, helicoid or adapter and is stated in millimetres unless stated otherwise.
Leica = M39x26tpi (threads per inch) and is also referred to as Leica Thread Mount or LTM. The Leica thread is interchangeable with M39x1 for all practical purposes.
[e] Not all enlarging lenses have a front thread. If the thread size is known it will be stated in Millimetres, left blank if not known, or stated 'None' if it is known to not have a front thread at all.
[f] The approximate period that the lens was sold, often sourced from advertising material in magazines and is only given as a guide.
[g] Special Attributes, intended applications, comments or points of difference.
[h] The Reference or source for the information in this table will be stated wherever possible in the References listed below.
[i] The Flange Focus Distance at Infinity describes the distance from the lens mounting flange (at the base of the enlarging lens) to the image plane (ie the film or sensor plane) when the lens is focused at Infinity. The measurement is given in millimetres unless stated otherwise.
[j] An Illuminated Aperture is a useful feature when a lens is used in an enlarger but it is a potential disadvantage when the lens is used as a taking lens. The aperture dial window allows stray light to enter the lens and cause veiling flare, reducing image contrast. It is normally easy to fix or cover with tape or similar.
[k] Negative Size is described in millimetres unless stated otherwise. Coverage is stated in degrees (°).
[l] The Number of Aperture Blades is stated if known. Apertures with very few blades can create geometric shapes that are poor approximations of a circles whilst apertures with many blades often create very good approximations of circles. A non circular aperture may contribute to an out of focus specular highlight that is distracting or to harshness in Bokeh in general. Conversely apertures that are circular also create circular out of focus specular highlight which are potentially less distracting. However a perfectly circular aperture is no guarantee of smooth Bokeh as Bokeh is largely determined by lens design.

NOTE: The original source of the above pdf was not recorded so the exact source can not be stated except that it is believed to be the US/English Rodenstock Photo web site which still shows a similar pdf in it's 'archive' section but one that was updated and shows a slightly different and smaller range of lenses. This later version of the pdf can be found below in reference number [38].
